“she needs makeup
to cover up
because society taught her
who she is, isn’t enough.”
she needs that lipstick
to coat her lips
in a soft delicate hue
that matches her speech.
straighteners and curlers
are modern day magic wands
needed to transform her hair
into whatever sort it’s not.
a pair of fake eyelashes please
to beautify those eyes.
that shan’t dare to dream, and if they may,
those dreams shouldn’t see the light of day.
needed is a pink blush
(artificial of course)
to add a natural red tinge
to those otherwise ugly cheekbones.
to edit her skin tone
she needs a thick layer of foundation
of a shade that somehow
garners her some appreciation.
but how long
before we realise
she ‘needs’ none of these.
she has a choice.

We all have a choice how we wish to conduct.
And it is the choice between what she needs and what she wants.

Exactly my point.
We must do what we want to.
Not what others want us to.

I don’t know if it’s just me but when I put on makeup, my confidence literally sky rockets. Why do we feel that we are not good enough without it? Are we doing it to ourselves as women or is it something that society is doing? I don’t know but it has to change

Haha, no honey, it is not just you. Even I feel better after having put on some makeup.
But sometimes some girls may want to ‘hide’ under the cosmetics because they do not think that they are enough. And that needs to change.
Makeup or no makeup is our choice. Make up or no make up, we all are enough. We are beautiful.

Yes..you’re right. That’s where the change needs to be made. That’s the lesson that needs to be taught. We are enough. Not too little. Not too much. Enough.

Yes. I just hope more people like us started understanding this!

Very well written and I really liked it 🙂
Makeup has become a favorite of every girl but the main point u raised certainly changes the thought process that we r beautiful doesn’t matter we use makeup or not! 🙂

Thank you so much Nisha! I am glad that you got the meaning so well and enjoyed the poem. Yes, we are all beautiful. With and without makeup!🌸

Quite relatable! I remember when I first started wearing makeup how it was more along the lines of “I need to wear it; can’t leave the house without it.” as well as the terrible pre-teen to teenage years of awful acne. Then one day I was like “I don’t need to coat my face in makeup for a quick errand. What a waste of product AND who is going to see me?” It was a matter of choosing how I cared seeing myself and the perception of others. I think it ought to enhance natural beauty, which we all have, than cover it up.
(Also, I never realized I had such deep feelings regarding this subject.) well done!! ☺️💫🌸

Awh thank you for sharing! And I think this is a really appropriate example for the statement that it is our choice! I can totally relate to your story! Honestly, it was that one day when I realised that I was not going to give in to this apparent need to put on make up to look good that I felt the most beautiful. And free.
But still, every now and then when I feel that I want to go that extra mile to put on some cosmetic, I go ahead and do it!
Thank you for such a lovely comment🦋

It’s lovely.
Though I wear make up cause I love too. Not because society wants me too.

Yay! That is what the last line means. You wear it because you want to. It is your decision. Your choice!

Yup! I did get that. But that’s the choice i made.

Really nice lines . I think the person should carry himself/herself (gender is irrelevant) the way they are willing and comfortable with to carry and not to become the eye catchy one. I mean if a girl is putting on some makeup, it should be because she loves herself that way and she is doing it for herself and not to impress people 😊. Just a thought.

Yeah, that is exactly what I mean by the last line. It is our choice! 🙂
That choice can be putting on make up or not putting it on.. we must do what we wish to do, irrespective of what others want us to do!

I am not against the use of makeup, if that’s what you thought I meant…

No. I dint interpreted that way. I just said if for example I am using the makeup then it should be because I want my face that way and not for others 😊

I really like the point you are making, but I’m here to throw light on the other side of the coin. There are some people who enjoy make up and use it as a form of self expression. Women should not be forced to wear makeup, men shouldn’t be shamed for it. It is your choice, and if you choose for or against it, you should be respected for that.

Hey Tanushka!
Thanks for the comment🌸
And the point you just stated is included in the last line of the poem ‘she has a choice’. Please Don’t misunderstand this as only meaning ‘she has a choice to NOT wear makeup’
The choice also applies to what you’re saying here.
‘Make up or no make up. She has a choice.’
I’m saying that wearing it or not wearing it is everyone’s choice.
I hope I’ve cleared your misunderstanding of the last line. I agree with what you just said and the last line includes this side of the coin too! I hope I’m making sense now?

No I clearly understood your last line. There was no misunderstanding to begin with. I appreciate your comment though. I was just stating the obvious.

Yeah no what you said is right!
I just get really tense when I think someone has misunderstood me! So I just panic, sort of. 🙈
Thanks for your interpretation!
